. Eckhart Tolle leads a meditation on “The Power of the Present Moment” at Wisdom 2.0 in 2014.
Tolle was born in Germany. He lived with his father in Spain from the age of thirteen. Around the age of twenty he moved to England. Since he had not done a high school education, he had to take an evening course to qualify for college. He then attended the University of London and the University of Cambridge. At the age of twenty-nine, he said, he experienced a “spiritual transformation” that marked the beginning of his functioning as a spiritual counselor and teacher. He then changed his name to “Eckhart”, after the 13th-century mystic Master Eckhart. He currently lives in the Canadian city of Vancouver.
Work and meditation
His first book, The Power of Now, was number one on the New York Times bestseller list. This work has been translated into more than thirty languages. American talk show host Oprah Winfrey considers “The Power of Now” to be one of her favorite books. In the video below, Eckhart Tolle elaborates on the ‘now’.
Another book — A New Earth — was number one on the New York Times bestseller list in March 2008. In January 2008, Oprah Winfrey selected A New Earth in her “Oprah’s Book Club” selection. This was accompanied by a ten-week “live online seminar” (or “webinar”) with Tolle. This started on March 3, 2008. On Saturday, October 30, 2010, Eckhart Tolle opened the month of spirituality with a two-hour speech about “making time” in De Doelen in Rotterdam.
